CITY is an Erasmus+ Sport project that transforms urban walking into a tool for inclusion, physical activity and community engagement. By combining accessible city trails, storytelling and youth participation, the project encourages young people to experience their cities in a more active, meaningful and inclusive way.
Many young people face barriers that limit their participation in sport, outdoor activities or community life. Economic disadvantage, accessibility challenges, cultural differences or simply the lack of welcoming public spaces can all reduce opportunities to stay active and connected.
CITY responds to these challenges by creating inclusive urban trails that encourage movement, dialogue and discovery. Walking becomes more than physical activity—it becomes an opportunity to learn, connect with others and experience the city from different perspectives.
The trails are developed with accessibility, diversity and participation in mind, making them relevant for young people with different backgrounds and abilities.
Each trail combines movement with reflection, local stories, interactive activities and opportunities for dialogue.
Young people and local stakeholders contribute to the development of the trails, ensuring they reflect real experiences and local needs.
The methodology can be adapted by youth organisations, municipalities and community groups across Europe.
promote light physical activity through accessible urban walking;
strengthen social inclusion and participation among young people;
encourage active citizenship by exploring local communities;
collect and share stories that foster empathy and understanding;
provide practical tools that other organisations can adapt in their own cities.
During the project, CITY develops practical resources that remain freely available after the project ends.
The main outcomes include:
a collection of CITY Inclusion Trails;
the CITY Storybook featuring youth experiences and digital stories;
practical resources for youth workers, educators and community organisations;
piloting and local events promoting inclusive urban walking and active lifestyles.
Urban Youth Moves – CITY is implemented with the support of the Erasmus+ Sport programme. The project contributes to promoting social inclusion, grassroots sport, active lifestyles and youth participation across Europe.
